As the holidays start to quickly creep up and you start hearing more use of the phrase, “It’s better to give than receive”, consider if your financial goals include giving to causes near & dear to your heart and what time of the year you find yourself giving.
As the holidays are quickly creeping up chances are you’ll start hearing more use of the phrase, “It’s better to give than receive”, consider if your financial goals include giving to causes near and dear to your heart. If your financial plan includes charitable contributions, different tax implications may be enforced depending on what time of the year you find yourself giving.

Helping With College? A Gift For Them But Taxes For You?
As we wrap up September and our focus on planning to navigate the cost of education, contributing to your grandchild’s college savings plan can give you warm fuzzies or a headache come tax season. Be sure you are aware of any tax implications as you make decisions on planning to assist financially in their education.
As we wrap up September and our focus on planning to navigate the cost of education, contributing to your grandchild’s college savings plan can give you warm fuzzies or a headache come tax season.
Families who value education want to assist their grandchildren and give them a good start coming out of school with as little student debt as possible.
There are multiple ways to assist in financially supporting grandchildren and your gifting can help offset or pay for their education, and you want to be sure you’re not earning an F in legacy planning. Let’s define a few of the more common ways of financial support:
-
-
-
-
- Paying The School Directly
-
-
-
Deciding to pay tuition to the school outright is the easiest way. One detail that is critical is to make sure you are only supporting their cost of tuition only, NOT room and board. Tuition paid directly to the school isn’t considered a gift, so there are no tax implications.
-
-
-
-
- Opening A 529 Savings Plan
-
-
-
You can always open a 529 Savings Plan in the grandchild’s name. This will result in tax free earnings and withdrawals when the money is used on qualifying educational expenses. This is different from paying the school directly because you can use it for room and board, in addition to tuition and other approved educational expenses. There is an annual gift tax exclusion of $17,000 per recipient for 2023. Depending on where you live, you may get a state tax credit or deduction for your contributions.
-
-
-
-
- Contributing To An Existing 529 Savings Plan
-
-
-
If you do not want to establish and open a 529 Saving Plan, you can contribute to a 529 Savings Plan already opened by the parents. Your gift can grow substantially over time with tax-free earnings and withdrawals. One thing to be aware of is assets held in a student or parent owned 529 Plan will be counted as parental assets on the FAFSA and could reduce their financial aid eligibility. Good news is you’re still eligible to receive the state tax credit if you live in the same state as the plan was originally opened.
-
-
-
-
- Straight Up Loan
-
-
-
You can give an interest free loan up to $10,000. Loans given exceeding $10,000 are subject to IRS set minimum interest rate. One option is to convert the loan to a gift but keep in mind interest on the loan will be taxable to you but not deductible by your grandchild. But keep in mind, if you forgive the loan in your Will, your grandchild could end up owing income tax on the debt forgiveness, and there’s always the potential they may not pay you back.
-
-
-
-
- Paying Off Student Loans
-
-
-
You can also pay off the student loans as a gift when they graduate. Any amount you pay off over $17,000 would be subject to filing a gift tax return. 529 Plan funds of up to $10,000 can be used for paying back student loans.
-
-
-
-
- Education Trust
-
-
-
Provides a measure of control by specifying wishes in a trust agreement and the trustee is legally obliged to fulfill them. You can restrict your grandchild’s access to funds regardless of their age. One thing to be aware of is legal and accounting fees can be higher, and these gifts are irrevocable.
Grandchildren are great and you may want to assist with paying for their education, but different ways of contributing come with different tax implications depending on where you live, how much you make and the method used. Work with Annex to help shape your legacy, including assisting with educational expenses, to build your comprehensive financial plan.

ABOUT ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease, yet it still costs loved ones an average of $250,000 a year to provide the care people living with ALS and their families need. Join the movement to provide help and hope today!
