23andMe Bankruptcy: Delete Your Data Before It’s Sold

On March 16, 2025, 23andMe, the genetic testing company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, putting the sensitive DNA data of over 15 million customers at risk. As the company seeks a buyer for its assets, privacy concerns are mounting over who might gain control of this information.

Your genetic data—revealing ancestry, health risks, and more—is deeply personal and irreplaceable. If sold to a third party, like a pharmaceutical firm or insurer, it could be used in ways you never agreed to, despite some legal safeguards. With the sale process underway, now is the time to act.

To delete your data, log into 23andMe, go to “Settings,” select “23andMe Data,” and choose “Permanently Delete Data,” then confirm via email. You can also revoke research consent under “Preferences.” Some data may be retained for legal reasons, but deletion reduces what’s at stake.

As of March 26, 2025, the future of 23andMe’s database is uncertain. Protect your privacy—delete your data before it’s too late.
